Back Pain Causes and Treatment

What causes back pain?

Back pain can be triggered by doing work we’re not used to, like 4 hours of gardening or something simply like sneezing or picking up a pen from the floor. So how is it that the body, which is otherwise super resilient gives into back pain at times?

The simple answer is that it’s not that single instant that caused the issue, but rather the accumulative effect of all activity, poor posture, falls and trips up till that point. At that specific point you felt the pain because your body surpassed a certain threshold. Like the last straw that broke the camel’s back effectively.

See every time we have knock, fall or slip our vertebrae are impacted somewhat. Twelve hours in a row on the x-box, may not be the best idea for your back. Anything we do that causes us to sustain a bad posture for prolonged periods of time, will start to create changes in the way the muscles and joints work.

Traumas and accidents can sometimes cause an almost instant change that takes us right over the threshold, depending on the severity, speed and force of the impact. At this point our joints may no longer move the way they’re supposed to which causes certain muscles and joints to overwork whilst other parts are getting weaker, causing instability.

In the same way your car needs to have all four wheels aligned to operate safely, your body also needs a healthy range in terms of spinal and joint alignment to operate in a healthy way. When the range changes, pressure builds up, movement is restricted and we start to experience pain.

Another common reason you may experience back-pain is due to a bulging or prolapsed disc which may put pressure on a particular nerve or on the spinal cord itself.

How back pain can be diagnosed?

It’s important to understand the full picture when it comes to diagnosing back pain as there are typically a combination of things at play. Some methods that we like to use at Corrective Chiropractic to diagnose back-pain are:

  • Understanding your full medical history.

  • Conducting a postural analysis to identify imbalances.

  • Taking posture pictures against a matrix for the front, side and back so we can map out how close or far you are from an optimal alignment.

  • Taking digital x-rays (if clinically required).

  • Measuring your weight distribution to see how much pressure is put through each side.

  • Performing a mobility for each segment of the spine to identify segments that are stuck or moving improperly or even moving excessively (aka) hyper-mobility.

  • Neurological testing to see if the nervous connection is working well or being disrupted along the way.

  • Using a nervoscope to identify points of inflammation along the segments of the spine.

What are symptoms of backpain?

Some common symptoms for backpain, which can affect the lower, middle or upper back include:

  • Sharp shooting or stabbing pain.

  • Pain that radiates down into the buttocks and leg .

  • Muscle aches along the back.

  • Pain that worsens by doing certain activities.

  • Pain which improves with reclining or laying down.

Effective back-pain treatment

There are several things that can be used to treat backpain:

  • Specific exercises and stretches

  • Using hot or cold applied to the area to reduce pains and aches

  • Following guidelines to ergonomically adjust your workspace

  • Corrective chiropractic adjustments to bring the spine and joints back to a balanced state. This helps to accelerate and support the healing process and corrects the alignment of spine and body to enable the muscle to function at healthy levels.

Our chiropractors provide exercises and stretches where required to ensure you do the right things, in the correct way, at the right time. They will also provide you with hands-on corrective treatment, through the skilful application of corrective chiropractic adjustments, to help you get back to a balanced state as quickly as possible.

Back Pain FAQ

How much does it cost?

The first visit where we do the root cause diagnosis, the x-rays (if clinically required) and the follow up visit, to go through the results of the root cause diagnoses, costs £120 total.

Chiropractic adjustments on the pay-as-you go rate are £40 per visit.

The number of visits you need will depend largely on the severity of your condition, how long it’s been going on for, condition of your muscular-skeletal structure and how well your nervous system responds to input. After doing the root cause diagnosis we will be able to give you a specific number based on our clinical background and experience.

What are your opening hours?

We’re open Monday to Friday from 8 AM till 8PM and Sat 8am till 2pm

How long does it take to get better?

This varies from person to person. Some factors to consider are how long you’ve been having this backpain for, your current level of health and condition of your structure, the severity of your pain and how well your nervous system responds to input.
Our experienced chiropractors will be able to advise you during the second visit, after completing the initial chiropractic check-up. Having the results in hand enables our chiropractors to give you specific recommendations. You will also have a chance to have your questions answered.

Can you explain what you mean by measured results?

It means that we track your improvements from the first initial assessment all the way through. We can basically review how much structural correction has been achieved during the course of the corrective chiropractic care.

I’ve got osteoporosis can you still help me?

Yes we can in most cases but this will depend on the integrity of the structure and bone density. To find out with certainty it’s best to book the initial chiropractic assessment.
